How do eyeglasses work?
No matter what type of vision impairment prevents you from seeing clearly, your eyeglasses work the same way to improve your vision. Eyeglass lenses are specially designed, curved pieces of glass placed between frames.
The curvature of the lens bends light rays as they approach your eye and helps the rays focus on your retina, the layer of the back of your eye sensitive to light that sends nerve impulses to your brain where visual images are formed. When rays focus behind or in front of your retina, you don’t see as well.
Eyeglasses can correct many types of vision conditions.
What types of vision conditions can eyeglasses correct?
Eyeglasses can correct many vision conditions that affect your ability to see clearly, such as:
- Presbyopia (age-related farsightedness)
Wearing eyeglasses helps to temporarily straighten your eyes or improves your vision while wearing them, but doesn’t permanently cure any vision condition. Notably, not wearing eyeglasses or some form of corrective lenses if you have a diagnosed or undiagnosed condition can make the condition worse.

How do I know if eyeglasses are right for me?
Depending on what type of vision condition you suffer from, whether it’s astigmatism, nearsightedness, or farsightedness, Dr. Choi assesses the severity of your situation and makes recommendations. In some cases, she makes contact lenses or vision therapy, such as Ortho-K, part of your personalized treatment plan.
If she feels contact lenses are the best solution for your vision problem, she helps you find the right pair. For instance, for certain eye health conditions, such as dry eye, wearing glasses makes more sense because this condition makes wearing contact lenses very difficult.
